A scene of grief and lamentation, where characters express deep sorrow. Common in gidayu-kyogen, depicting parent-child separations or agonizing conflicts between duty and emotion. One of kabuki's most moving scene types. Famous examples include Matsuomaru's grief in Terakoya and Sagami's lament in Kumagai Jinya.
