📖 Synopsis

A psychological drama in which a man driven into an impossible situation gradually loses his composure.

The setting is the Aburaya, a pleasure house in the Furuichi entertainment district near Ise Grand Shrine. The protagonist, Fukuoka Mitsugi, has lost an important sword belonging to his lord's household. He has concealed his identity and taken up residence at the Aburaya in order to recover it.

However, he is subjected to relentless harassment and misunderstandings by those around him, especially the manipulative serving woman Manno. The schemes surrounding the sword grow ever more tangled, and Mitsugi's position becomes increasingly desperate.

Doubts arise in his relationship with the courtesan he loves, pushing him to the brink both emotionally and socially. At last, Mitsugi loses all self-control.

🌟 Highlights

The greatest highlight is watching the upright, earnest protagonist being pushed step by step to his breaking point by one injustice after another. The sense of 'Why must this keep happening to me?' is palpable, drawing the audience irresistibly into his plight.

This work belongs to the 'enkiri-mono' (severance play) tradition, depicting in meticulous detail how the feelings between a man and woman grow misaligned. One misunderstanding breeds another, and the relationship crumbles before our eyes — it is compelling viewing.

The finale, when all the quietly accumulated emotion erupts in a single explosive moment, is overwhelming. The tension reaches its absolute peak, making it impossible to look away.

🎭 Characters

Fukuoka Mitsugi
福岡貢
The adopted son of Fukuoka Magodayū, an onshi (priestly guide) at Ise Grand Shrine. An onshi served as both a Shinto priest and a guide for Ise pilgrims, holding a status between samurai and townsman. In kabuki role types, Mitsugi is the quintessential 'pintokona' — outwardly a gentle, handsome man (nimaime), but with an inner core of steel that emerges in moments of crisis. (This contrasts sharply with the hapless young master Manjirō, a classic 'tsukkorobashi' type.) His earnest nature makes him an easy target for Manno's torments. He desperately suppresses his jealousy and wounded pride until he finally snaps. The resulting 'koroshiba' (murder scene), in which he is driven to kill one person after another under the spell of a cursed blade, is breathtaking.
Manno
万野
A serving woman at the Aburaya and one of kabuki's most detestable villainesses. She has conspired with Tokushima Iwaji and his accomplices, who plot to seize control of the Awa domain. Her schemes include trying to steal the precious sword from Mitsugi and driving a wedge between him and Okon. She manipulates Oshika — who is infatuated with Mitsugi — into handing over love letters and large sums of money, then uses these to publicly humiliate Mitsugi. Her methods are thoroughly underhanded. She is ultimately cut down by the enraged Mitsugi — a fate entirely of her own making.
Okon
お紺
The leading courtesan of the Aburaya and a renowned beauty. She and Mitsugi are deeply in love, but in order to recover the sword's certificate of authenticity from the enemy, she deliberately treats Mitsugi with cold cruelty, performing an 'aisozukashi' (feigned rejection). In most kabuki plays featuring such a rejection scene (such as 'Kagotsuribe'), the heroine is killed by the enraged man — but Okon is a rare heroine who survives to see a happy ending.
Kisuke
喜助
A cook at the Aburaya. His father was once a retainer of Mitsugi's birth father, giving him a deep sense of loyalty toward Mitsugi. When Manno tries to take custody of the important sword, Kisuke senses danger and makes a quick-witted move: 'I'll hold on to it myself!' He is one of Mitsugi's few allies in the hostile territory of the Aburaya.
Oshika
お鹿
A courtesan at the Aburaya. Her looks may be plain, but she is known for her kind and gentle nature. Unfortunately, her unrequited love for Mitsugi is exploited by the scheming Manno. Manipulated into handing over love letters and money (all at Manno's instigation), and pressing Mitsugi with unwanted declarations of love, she inadvertently makes his situation worse. Though she means no harm, she meets a tragic fate.
Imada Manjirō
今田万次郎
The son of a high-ranking retainer of the Awa domain and the young lord whom Mitsugi once served. A classic 'tsukkorobashi' character in kabuki — handsome but so timid and naive that he could be 'knocked over with a poke.' Despite Mitsugi's desperate efforts to recover the famous sword 'Aoe Shimosaka,' this feckless young master pawns it to fund his amusements. He is the 'hopeless young lord' whose thoughtlessness causes Mitsugi no end of trouble — yet he remains somehow endearing.
Okishi
お岸
A courtesan at the Aburaya and a junior colleague of the heroine Okon. She is secretly the lover of Imada Manjirō.
Tokushima Iwaji
actually Aidama-ya Kitaroku) (徳島岩次(実は藍玉屋北六)
He poses as a wealthy samurai patron from Awa at the Aburaya, but he is actually Aidama-ya Kitaroku, a merchant collaborator who has switched identities with the real Iwaji. Together with Iwaji, he schemes to steal the courtesan Okon from Mitsugi.
Aidama-ya Kitaroku
actually Tokushima Iwaji) (藍玉屋北六(実は徳島岩次)
He appears to be a humble clerk at a dye merchant's shop, but this man is in fact the real Tokushima Iwaji — the villain plotting to seize control of the Awa domain. He has swapped names and positions with his retainer to conceal his true identity. He is the mastermind pulling strings from the shadows, scheming to acquire both the famous sword and its certificate of authenticity.
