📖 Synopsis

A stray bullet fired in the dark sets in motion a cruel chain of irony and misunderstanding.

On the rain-soaked Yamazaki Highway, Hayano Kanpei — now living as a humble hunter — encounters his former comrade Senzaki Yagorō. Learning that preparations for the vendetta are underway, Kanpei resolves to raise the funds needed to join the cause.

Meanwhile, Okaru's father Yoichibei is hurrying home with fifty ryō — money obtained by selling his daughter into service — hoping to restore his son-in-law Kanpei to samurai status. The bandit Ono Sadakurō ambushes and kills Yoichibei, stealing the money.

Moments later, in the pitch darkness, Kanpei fires his hunting rifle and the bullet strikes Sadakurō dead. Kanpei takes the money, believing it to be a stroke of fortune that will fund the vendetta. He has no idea that the gold was purchased with his father-in-law's life.

🌟 Highlights

The scene at Teppō Watashi (the Rifle Crossing) establishes Kanpei's desperate hope for redemption. Driven by a single-minded desire to join the vendetta, he racks his brain for a way to raise the necessary funds.

The simultaneous murder and accidental shooting on the dark Yamazaki Highway is one of kabuki's most celebrated scenes. Sadakurō speaks only a single line — "Fifty ryō..." — yet combined with the sinister beauty of this iroaku (handsome villain) role, the moment has become legendary. Sadakurō's cold-blooded murder, Kanpei's chance shot, and the seizure of the money in total darkness all unfold simultaneously, with Kanpei carrying away the gold utterly unaware of what he has done.

The bitter irony surrounding those fifty ryō is the heart of this act. Money from a daughter's sale leads to a father's death, and that same money passes into the hands of the man who was meant to benefit from it. Goodwill begets tragedy — a merciless twist of fate.

🎭 Characters

Hayano Kanpei
早野勘平
Originally a handsome young samurai in the service of Lord Enya Hangan, Kanpei's fate takes a dark turn when he is away on a secret tryst with his lover Okaru at the very moment his lord commits the fateful sword attack (Act III).

Taking refuge at Okaru's family home, he lives as a hunter. Yet he is consumed by the desire to prove his loyalty — to raise money and join the vendetta. In Act V (Yamazaki Highway), he accidentally shoots a man in the dark, setting off a devastating chain of misunderstandings that will lead to his own ritual suicide.

His famous lament — "All because I was lost in passion..." — and his beautiful yet heartbreaking death scene are among kabuki's most tearful moments.

Senzaki Yagorō
千崎弥五郎
One of the loyal Akō rōnin.

In Act V, he encounters Kanpei on the Yamazaki Highway and informs him about the vendetta preparations, reigniting Kanpei's hope.

In Act VI, he comes to collect money from Kanpei, only to witness Kanpei's tragic end — a suicide born of terrible misunderstanding. He finds himself an unwitting witness to one of the story's most devastating moments.

Ono Sadakurō
斧定九郎
The son of Kudayū, but so thoroughly wicked that even his own father has disowned him.

In Act V, he murders Okaru's father Yoichibei and steals fifty ryō — an act of cold brutality. And yet, with his pale-painted face, black kimono, and slender silhouette, he radiates an irresistible aura of villainous beauty.

Though he speaks only a single line — "Fifty ryō..." — his sheer charisma steals the stage with the impact of a leading man. He is one of kabuki's most beloved characters. (In the end, of course, he is shot by Kanpei, who mistakes him for a wild boar.)

Yoichibei
与市兵衛
Okaru's father and Okaya's husband, appearing in Act V.

Wanting to help his son-in-law Kanpei return to samurai life, he makes the painful decision to sell his daughter Okaru into service. After completing the arrangements and receiving the advance payment, he is murdered by Sadakurō on his way home.

The money passing from Yoichibei to Kanpei through this chain of violence becomes the catalyst for the cascading tragedy of Act VI.
