📖 Synopsis

On the eve of the vendetta, parents and children, husbands and wives each reveal their deepest resolve in this quiet yet powerful climax. The scene is set on a snowy morning in Yamashina, where Ōboshi Yuranosuke lives in seclusion as he prepares for the attack on their enemy.

Kakogawa Honzō's wife Tonase and their daughter Konami arrive at the Ōboshi residence. Konami is betrothed to Yuranosuke's son Rikiya, but the engagement has been left in limbo since Lord Hangan's forced suicide and the dissolution of the household. Since Honzō played a role in the events leading to Hangan's death, Yuranosuke's wife Oishi firmly refuses to accept the marriage and turns the visitors away.

Tonase and Konami demonstrate their resolve to die rather than accept rejection. Then Honzō himself appears, disguised as a komusō (wandering monk), and reveals his willingness to offer his own life. Yuranosuke sees through to Honzō's true intentions and finally permits the union of Rikiya and Konami. In his final moments, Honzō entrusts them with the floor plans of Moronao's mansion, clearly paving the way for the night raid.

🌟 Highlights

The beauty of this act lies in how each character's resolve and sincerity quietly emerge through restrained yet deeply emotional drama. The setting — a secluded dwelling wrapped in snow at Yamashina — heightens the tension and inner conflict of every character, lending weight to each line of dialogue.

The pivotal moment comes when Honzō appears in his komusō disguise and reveals his readiness to die. His sacrifice breaks the deadlock over the contested marriage and marks a major turning point in the story.

In the finale, when the mansion floor plans are entrusted to the conspirators, the narrative rapidly converges toward the night raid. This clear dramatic structure makes the act an essential turning point in the overall arc of Chūshingura.

🎭 Characters

Ōboshi Yuranosuke
大星由良之助
The true protagonist of the entire Chūshingura saga. His character is modeled after the historical Ōishi Kuranosuke.

In Act IV, he rushes to Lord Hangan's side during the ritual suicide, inherits his master's dying wish, and resolves to lead the vendetta. In Act VII, he deliberately plays the part of a dissolute rōnin in Gion's pleasure quarters to deceive the enemy.

Beneath his carefree exterior, he harbors a burning sense of loyalty and iron determination, enduring his solitary burden without revealing his true feelings to anyone. He is the very embodiment of quiet, steadfast heroism — one of kabuki's greatest and most demanding roles.

Oishi
お石
Ōboshi Yuranosuke's wife and Rikiya's mother.

In Act IX, she appears as a resolute samurai wife who supports her husband's vendetta plans. When Konami and her mother Tonase come calling, Oishi coldly turns them away to protect her husband's secret mission — yet ultimately accepts them in the end.

She embodies both strength and compassion, a woman fully worthy of standing beside the leader of the forty-seven rōnin.

Ōboshi Rikiya
大星力弥
The eldest son of Yuranosuke and Oishi, Rikiya serves Lord Hangan as a young page. He witnesses his lord's ritual suicide and joins the procession escorting the remains to the family temple.

After becoming a rōnin, he moves to Yamashina with his father, biding his time for the vendetta. He is betrothed to Kakogawa Honzō's daughter Konami, and as the story progresses, the growing weight of youth, resolve, and family duty upon his shoulders becomes increasingly apparent.

Kakogawa Honzō
加古川本蔵
Chief retainer of Momonoi Wakasanosuke. In Act III, when he learns of his lord's conflict with Moronao, he uses a bribe to defuse the situation — a pragmatic, worldly-wise samurai.

However, during the sword attack in the Pine Corridor, he restrains Hangan and inadvertently prevents him from killing Moronao. Objectively, this makes him partly responsible for the tragedy — a fact that haunts Act IX.

In Act IX, Honzō's true moment arrives. He is willing to trade his own life in exchange for his daughter Konami's marriage to Rikiya. The collision between his parental love and his samurai calculations creates the act's most intensely moving drama.

Tonase
戸無瀬
Kakogawa Honzō's second wife and Konami's stepmother. Though she has no blood ties to Konami, this only strengthens her desire to see her stepdaughter's love fulfilled — a woman of strong convictions.

In Act IX, she journeys through the snow to Yamashina, where she drives the drama forward with both the resolve of a samurai wife and the deep affection of a mother.

Konami
小浪
Kakogawa Honzō's daughter and Ōboshi Rikiya's betrothed. Even as their engagement is thrown into doubt by their lord's crisis, she steadfastly clings to her love for Rikiya and accompanies Tonase on the journey to Yamashina.

Act IX is dominated by the conflicts of the adults, but Konami's pure, youthful devotion brings a tender poignancy and innocent beauty to the stage. Her image in a white bridal robe is particularly striking in its fragile loveliness.
