📖 Synopsis

A wife's prayer at the cost of her life miraculously restores her husband's ability to walk. This is a story of love and sacrifice between husband and wife.

On their journey to avenge his brother's death, Iinuma Katsugorō and his wife Hatsuhana arrive deep in the mountains of Hakone. Katsugorō's retainer Fudesuke appears in disguise and informs them that their enemy, Takiguchi Kōzuke, is nearby.

Takiguchi Kōzuke takes Hatsuhana's mother Sawarabi hostage and demands that Hatsuhana submit to him. After being taken away, Hatsuhana returns claiming she wishes to pray at the waterfall, and stands beneath the cascading water in fervent prayer.

Through the power of her prayer, Katsugorō's legs are miraculously healed — but Hatsuhana has vanished. Fudesuke reveals the truth of Hatsuhana's final moments, and Katsugorō vows to carry out his vendetta.

🌟 Highlights

The scene where Takiguchi Kōzuke corners Hatsuhana using her mother as a hostage showcases the villain's cruelty. Hatsuhana is torn apart — she must submit to the enemy to save her mother, even if it means abandoning her husband.

The climax, where Katsugorō's legs are restored through Hatsuhana's prayer, is the greatest highlight. Hatsuhana stands beneath the pounding waterfall, praying with all her might. Her love, offered at the cost of her very life, produces a miracle.

The revelation of Hatsuhana's death and Katsugorō's vow of vengeance bring the act to a powerful close. The grief and rage of losing his wife transform into an unshakeable resolve for revenge.

🎭 Characters

Katsugorō
飯沼勝五郎
A young samurai seeking to avenge his brother's death. Unfortunately, he has lost the use of his legs, and must travel in a wheeled cart pulled by his wife Hatsuhana.

In kabuki, this type of role is called a "shinbō tachiyaku" — a hero who endures all hardship with quiet strength and resilience.

The performance demands exceptional physical skill: the actor must convey emotion using only the upper body while seated, and then dramatically demonstrate the miracle of standing and walking again.

Hatsuhana
初花
Katsugorō's devoted wife, praised as a paragon of wifely virtue (teijo). She pulls the cart carrying her disabled husband across the rugged mountains of Hakone, showing both physical strength and tender love.

In the climax at the waterfall, she prays desperately beneath the cascading water for her husband's recovery. Remarkably, within the story, she is actually already a ghost at this point — killed by the enemy, her spirit has returned to fulfill one final act of devotion.

The transformation from a living woman to an otherworldly being is portrayed with a sacred, ephemeral beauty that is deeply moving.

Takiguchi Kōzuke
滝口上野
The cold-blooded villain who murdered Katsugorō's brother. He is not merely a brute, but a sophisticated antagonist who combines intelligence with menacing charm.

In the "torture scene" (semeba) where he kicks Katsugorō and forcibly takes Hatsuhana away, the actor must project both audacious boldness and a dangerous allure — making this a challenging and compelling villain role.

Fudesuke
筆助
Katsugorō's loyal retainer, a man of deep devotion. He first appears disguised as a comical fellow named "Tsukinowa," clowning around with the local outcasts. But when the moment demands it, he reveals himself as a resolute warrior.

The dramatic contrast between his clownish disguise and his true warrior spirit makes this a thrilling role. He also plays a crucial part at the end, arriving with the truth about Hatsuhana's fate to spur Katsugorō toward his vendetta.

Sawarabi
早蕨
Hatsuhana's mother. She followed her daughter and son-in-law out of concern for their dangerous journey of vengeance, but was unfortunately discovered by the enemy Takiguchi Kōzuke and taken hostage.

The scene where she tearfully watches her daughter submit to the enemy in order to save her is filled with a mother's anguish — truly heartbreaking to witness.
