📖 Synopsis

Tokubei, a clerk at the soy sauce merchant Hiranoya, and Ohatsu, a courtesan at the Temma-ya house in Osaka's Dōjima Shinchi quarter, are deeply in love. However, Tokubei's uncle plans to marry him off to his wife's niece, and Tokubei's stepmother has already accepted the betrothal money of two kanme (roughly 2.4 million yen) without telling him.

Tokubei refuses the marriage and tries to return the betrothal money, but his friend Kuheiji begs him for a short-term loan, tearfully pleading "just for a few days." Out of goodwill, Tokubei lends him the money. But far from repaying it, Kuheiji publicly accuses Tokubei of being a swindler, claiming the money was stolen from him, and beats Tokubei in front of a crowd.

Ohatsu, who has been worrying about Tokubei since they parted at Ikutama Shrine, discovers him standing bruised and battered at the entrance to the Temma-ya. She secretly hides him beneath the veranda of the teahouse. Soon after, a drunken Kuheiji arrives and heaps abuse upon Tokubei. Trembling with rage beneath the floorboards, Tokubei is held back by Ohatsu pressing her foot against him. She then declares to Kuheiji: "Tokubei has no choice but to die. I want to hear that he is resolved to die" — while using her foot to ask the hidden Tokubei whether he is prepared to die together with her. Tokubei draws her foot to his throat like a blade, signaling his consent.

Late that night, when all in the house are asleep, Ohatsu and Tokubei slip away from the Temma-ya and make their way toward the Tenjin Forest in Sonezaki.

After their departure, word arrives from the oil merchant exposing Kuheiji's scheme of forging Tokubei's seal — Tokubei's innocence is proven at last. Kyūemon, Tokubei's uncle and master of the Hiranoya, who had come to the Temma-ya out of concern, reveals that he had actually intended all along to let Tokubei and Ohatsu marry. He stands at the entrance calling out "Don't die!" — but it is already too late. The two lovers end their lives, believing they will be united in the next world.

🌟 Highlights

The scene in which Ohatsu hides the cornered Tokubei beneath the veranda is extraordinary. Ohatsu reaches down with her foot to touch Tokubei, and the two confirm their resolve to die — communicating not through words, but through the sole of a foot. This electrifying scene, charged with both tension and eroticism, is among the most celebrated in all of kabuki. It was also memorably featured in the film "Kokuhō" (National Treasure).

The climactic "Tenjin no Mori" (Tenjin Forest) scene is equally powerful. The two lovers bid farewell to this world and walk the path toward death, their journey rendered in the hauntingly beautiful poetic narration of the jōruri chanting. The prayer-like closing words — "Mirai no jōbutsu, utagai naki" (Their salvation in the next life is beyond all doubt) — bring audiences to tears.

🎭 Characters

Hiranoya Tokubei
平野屋徳兵衛
A clerk at Hiranoya, a soy sauce merchant. He worked his way up from an apprentice under his uncle's care, earning enough trust to be offered a marriage into the family. But he refused, because his heart belonged to Ohatsu. When his stepmother goes ahead with the betrothal arrangements and he loses the returned dowry money to the treacherous Kuheiji, he loses his honor as a merchant and is driven to believe that death is his only option.
Temma-ya Ohatsu
天満屋お初
A courtesan at the Temma-ya house in Osaka's Dōjima Shinchi pleasure quarter. She has pledged to become Tokubei's wife. Her pure and steadfast heart will not allow her to abandon Tokubei in his suffering. She secretly confirms their shared resolve beneath the veranda of the teahouse, and in the end chooses to die with him in the forest of Sonezaki, believing they will be joined in the afterlife.
Kuheiji
九平次
The owner of an oil shop. He borrows money from Tokubei under the pretense of a three-day loan, but his intention to deceive is clear from the start. He publicly denounces Tokubei at Ikutama Shrine and slanders him again at the Temma-ya, systematically driving Tokubei toward his tragic end.
Hiranoya Kyūemon
平野屋久右衛門
The master of the Hiranoya and Tokubei's uncle. He arranges for Tokubei to marry his wife's niece and take over the shop, even sending the betrothal money to Tokubei's stepmother — unwittingly setting the tragedy in motion. In truth, he had intended all along to let Tokubei marry Ohatsu, and his apparent severity was meant to pave the way. But Kuheiji's treachery renders his good intentions futile.
