📖 Synopsis

Cornered outlaws boldly proclaim their identities. A work that distills the aesthetic of the noble villain.

The five thieves known as the Shiranami Gonin Otoko (Five Thieves of the White Waves) have been pursued to the banks of the Inasegawa River, where they make their stand. The five line up side by side and, one by one, announce their names and histories.

Through their self-introductions, each man's appearance and station are vividly displayed, and the atmosphere becomes charged with intensity. After all five have spoken, the scene transitions into a spectacular fight with the arresting officers.

The line-up scene exists less to advance the plot than to showcase the magnetic appeal of these five characters.

🌟 Highlights

The composition of all five men standing in matching kimono before a backdrop of cherry blossoms in full bloom is breathtaking. The scene in which each steps forward in turn to proclaim his identity is one of kabuki's most visually splendid moments. The combination of stunning visual beauty and the defiant dignity of these outlaws captivates every audience.

The self-introductions delivered in the lilting 7-5 syllable rhythm are equally compelling. Nippon Daemon, Benten Kozō Kikunosuke, Tadanobu Rihei, Akaboshi Jūzaburō, Nangō Rikimaru — the distinct personality of each man emerges through the cadence of his words.

This scene was created not to advance the story, but to let the five thieves shine at their most magnificent. It is a moment to be savored slowly and fully.

🎭 Characters

Nippon Daemon
日本駄右衛門
The boss and central figure among the Shiranami Gonin Otoko (Five Thieves of the White Waves). His commanding presence can transform the atmosphere of a scene in an instant — watch for the power of his voice and the gravitas of his stance. He dominates the stage with his resonant delivery and the deliberate pauses (ma) he takes. Standing at the center of the lineup, his weighty bearing and the satisfying rhythm of his tsurane (extended speech) are highlights to savor.
Benten Kozō Kikunosuke
弁天小僧菊之助
One of the Shiranami Gonin Otoko and the most popular character, combining beauty with strength. The contrast between his 'beautiful' appearance while disguised as a woman and his 'dashing' true form as a man is irresistible. His famous line from the Hamamatsu-ya scene — 'Shirazā itte kikasemashō' (If you don't know, then let me tell you!) — is one of the most widely recognized speeches in kabuki. Watch for his bold, rhythmic delivery of this verbal challenge, riding the 7-5 syllable meter.
Tadanobu Rihei
忠信利平
One of the Shiranami Gonin Otoko. Though less flamboyant than the other four, he possesses a cool composure and the understated appeal of a man who leads from one step behind. In the line-up scene, his strength lies not in flashy action but in the solidity of his stance and the depth of his voice. When he hits his mark, the entire ensemble of five comes together — he is the linchpin who holds the group in balance.
Akaboshi Jūzaburō
赤星十三郎
One of the Shiranami Gonin Otoko — a beautiful young swordsman. Originally a page (koshō) in a samurai household, he retains an air of refinement even as a thief, with an elegance in his speech and manner. Amid the roughness of his fellow outlaws, he alone exudes the beauty of a figure from a woodblock print. Watch for the sensuality of his delivery and gestures, tinged with a faint melancholy.
Nangō Rikimaru
南郷力丸
One of the Shiranami Gonin Otoko and the partner of Benten Kozō. Born into a family of fishermen, he is rough, boisterous, and brimming with the energy of a man of the sea. In his scenes with Benten Kozō, his sharp retorts and the way he sets up his partner create an outstanding comedic chemistry. In the line-up scene, his bold movements and booming voice make him the embodiment of raw power among the five.
