📖 Synopsis

A beautiful young lady turns out to be a male bandit in disguise. This play delights audiences with its thrilling reveal and audacious bravado.

A customer who appears to be a young lady of a samurai household visits Hamamatsuya, a kimono shop in Kamakura. The shop attendants suspect her of shoplifting, and a commotion breaks out.

The lady's attendant, posing as a retainer, aggressively confronts the shop, escalating the situation. Then a samurai named Nippon Daemon appears to mediate and sees through the customer's true identity.

The "lady" reveals himself to be Benten Kozō Kikunosuke and delivers a famous self-introduction speech. Together with his partner Nangō Rikimaru, they settle the affair and make their exit.

🌟 Highlights

The transformation from a demure lady to a rough male bandit is the greatest highlight. In an instant, a graceful young woman becomes a swaggering thief. The actor displays both the beauty of an onnagata (female role) and the power of a tachiyaku (male role) simultaneously — a thrill unique to kabuki.

The self-introduction speech (tsurane) is equally famous. Beginning with the iconic line "Shiraza iwatte kikase yashō" ("If you don't know, then sit down and listen!"), Benten Kozō's speech is one of kabuki's most celebrated passages.

The interplay among the three conspirators is also riveting. Benten Kozō, Nangō Rikimaru, and the mediator Nippon Daemon — the audience later learns all three are in league together. Their skillful coordination in this scene is a masterclass in entertaining deception.

🎭 Characters

Benten Kozō Kikunosuke
弁天小僧菊之助
One of the Shiranami Gonin Otoko (Five Thieves), a beloved character who combines beauty with daring. The contrast between his "pretty" appearance while disguised as a woman and his "cool" swagger when he reveals his true identity is absolutely captivating.

His famous line — "Shiraza iwatte kikase yashō" ("If you don't know, then sit down and listen!") — is one of the most iconic speeches in all of kabuki. Watch how he delivers this bravura monologue in a rhythmic, poetic cadence.

Nangō Rikimaru
南郷力丸
One of the Five Thieves and Benten Kozō's partner in crime. Born into a fishing family, he has a rough, energetic personality — the quintessential "man of the sea."

His banter with Benten Kozō is pitch-perfect, whether he's delivering sharp retorts or stepping back to let Benten shine. In the lineup scene, his bold movements and deep voice embody the raw power of the group.

Nippon Daemon
日本駄右衛門
The "boss" of the Five Thieves. In the Hamamatsuya scene, he appears disguised as a samurai, but he is actually working in cahoots with Benten and Nangō to swindle the shop.
Sōnosuke
浜松屋宗之助
The young master of Hamamatsuya, a dutiful and kind-hearted young man. He is actually not the biological son of the shop owner Kōbei — he was adopted after being found as an abandoned baby. He still keeps a scrap of the kimono he was wrapped in when found, sewn into the sleeve of his undergarment.

In the rarely performed scene following Hamamatsuya ("Kuramae no Ba"), this scrap of fabric becomes the key to revealing that Nippon Daemon is actually his biological father.

Ōkami no Akujirō
狼の悪次郎
A henchman of the Five Thieves' boss Nippon Daemon. Despite his fearsome name ("Akujirō the Wolf"), he is actually a minor villain who serves as the go-between connecting Daemon and the Five Thieves.

In the Hamamatsuya scene, he runs errands behind the scenes — collecting the matching costumes for the famous "Inasegawa Lineup" scene, among other tasks. Depending on the production, he may loyally serve Daemon or even try to betray him — a slippery character you can never quite trust.

Bantō Yokurō
番頭与九郎
The veteran head clerk of Hamamatsuya. He handles customer service when the disguised Benten Kozō visits the shop. He puts on his best merchant's charm for the elegant young lady (who is actually a man!), but when the shoplifting accusation erupts, he shifts between sternly pressing the case and panicking when threatened by Nangō Rikimaru.

Earnest yet comical, he is a lovable "sanmaime" (comic role). The more flustered he becomes, the more the Five Thieves' audacity stands out.

Tobigashira Seiji
鳶頭清次
The boss of the local firemen's brigade who oversees the neighborhood where Hamamatsuya is located. Quick-tempered and street-smart, he is the quintessential dependable "big brother" figure.

When the dispute over shoplifting erupts at Hamamatsuya, he steps in as mediator. Even when facing dangerous criminals like Benten Kozō and Nangō Rikimaru, he refuses to back down — watch for his courage and swagger.
