📖 Synopsis

This act depicts the intrigue surrounding a secret letter and the resolve of those willing to sacrifice their lives for loyalty to their lord.

At the Ichiriki Teahouse in Gion, Ōboshi Yuranosuke appears to be spending his days in idle pleasure. His son Rikiya arrives with an urgent letter. Yuranosuke waits for the right moment, sends Rikiya away, and reads the secret dispatch in his private room.

Upstairs, the courtesan Okaru uses a hand mirror to read the letter's reflection from above, while beneath the floorboards, the traitor Ono Kudayū has crept in to spy. Yuranosuke realizes the letter has been compromised. He lowers Okaru down on a ladder and offers to buy out her contract.

Okaru's brother, Teraoka Heiemon, then appears and reunites with his sister. Through Okaru, he learns about the secret letter and Kudayū's spying. Yuranosuke tests the resolve of both siblings, and once satisfied, he strikes down Kudayū to settle the matter.

🌟 Highlights

The scene where the secret letter is spied upon simultaneously from above and below is one of kabuki's most iconic images, immortalized in countless ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Yuranosuke reads the letter in his room, Okaru peers through her mirror from the upper floor, and Kudayū lurks beneath the floorboards — three perspectives converging on a single stage in a truly spectacular theatrical composition.

The reunion between Okaru and her brother Heiemon is another highlight. Okaru learns that her husband Kanpei has died, and she resolves to sacrifice her own life for Kanpei's honor and her brother's cause. Heiemon, in turn, accepts his sister's determination with deep emotion.

The climax comes when Yuranosuke strikes down Kudayū. Having witnessed the siblings' unwavering resolve, Yuranosuke finally reveals his true intentions and violently dispatches the traitor who had been a cancer within their ranks. The moment when he unleashes the emotions he has kept hidden behind his facade of debauchery is truly the crowning moment of Act VII.

🎭 Characters

Ōboshi Yuranosuke
大星由良之助
The true protagonist of the entire Chūshingura saga. His character is modeled after the historical Ōishi Kuranosuke.

After rushing to his lord Hangan's side during the ritual suicide, Yuranosuke inherits his master's dying wish and resolves to lead the vendetta. To lull their enemy Moronao into a false sense of security, he deliberately plays the part of a dissolute, drunken rōnin in the pleasure quarters of Gion (Act VII).

Beneath his carefree exterior, he harbors a burning sense of loyalty and iron determination, enduring his solitary burden without revealing his true feelings to anyone. He is the very embodiment of quiet, steadfast heroism — one of kabuki's greatest and most demanding roles.

Ōboshi Rikiya
大星力弥
The eldest son of Yuranosuke and Oishi, Rikiya serves Lord Hangan as a young page. He witnesses his lord's ritual suicide and joins the procession escorting the remains to the family temple.

After becoming a rōnin, he moves to Yamashina with his father, biding his time for the vendetta. In Act VII (Gion Ichiriki Chaya), he plays a crucial role by delivering an urgent secret letter to his father, ratcheting up the tension of the scene.

As the story progresses, audiences can see him mature, gradually shouldering the weight of duty and family responsibility beneath his youthful exterior.

Okaru
おかる
Kanpei's beloved — a passionate and strikingly beautiful woman.

In Act III, her secret rendezvous with Kanpei inadvertently triggers the tragedy that follows. Deeply devoted to Kanpei, she sells herself into service as a courtesan to raise money for his cause.

In Act VII (Gion Ichiriki Chaya), she accidentally reads Yuranosuke's secret letter through a mirror and nearly pays for it with her life. Her joyful reunion with her brother Heiemon is cut short when she learns of her beloved Kanpei's death — making her one of the story's most tragic heroines.

Teraoka Heiemon
寺岡平右衛門
Okaru's older brother. Though he holds the humble rank of ashigaru (foot soldier), his loyalty is second to none.

His unwavering devotion earns him Yuranosuke's recognition, and he becomes the only ashigaru accepted into the band of forty-seven rōnin.

A fiercely devoted brother with an honest, straightforward character — the kind of man you cannot help but root for.

Ono Kudayū
斧九太夫
A senior retainer of the Enya household who is secretly a traitor. His character is modeled after the historical Ōno Kurōbei.

When the household was dissolved, he schemed to claim more than his fair share of the remaining funds, and later defected to Moronao's side as a spy — a greedy and treacherous old man.

In Act VII, he hides beneath the floorboards to spy on Yuranosuke and discover his true intentions. In the end, however, Yuranosuke exposes and strikes him down.
