Pride and vanity lead to ruin. A single moment of weakness destroys a man's life.

Chūbei, the adopted son of a courier house, has boasted that he has money to ransom the courtesan Umegawa. Then Tanbaya Hachiemon appears and publicly challenges him — if he has the money, let him show it.

Backed into a corner with no way out, Chūbei reaches for the sealed packet of money entrusted to him by clients. The moment the seal is broken, the act of embezzlement is complete. Chūbei and Umegawa become fugitives.

The scene where Hachiemon publicly corners Chūbei crackles with tension. Hachiemon, who is also Chūbei's rival in love, exploits Chūbei's vanity to set a trap. As pride and face become entangled, Chūbei finds himself with no escape.

The moment the seal is broken is the play's supreme highlight. Once he touches the sealed packet, there is no turning back.
